This project arose from the questions “Where do I come from and where do I fit in?”. ‘Identity and Multiculturalism’ was to help people understand that identities are not static but constantly tranforming and also to celebrate identities that grow out of the strength of diverse cultures. This project consists of a book that can be opened up on both sides and be read simultaneously or separately, and a map that is reversible. The visual narrative of the map expresses the transitional moment where diverse cultures (in this case, the Korean culture and the English culture) meet to transform into a stronger, more flexible identity that can respond to unpredictability, change and differences. As in nature, where the edges, in other words, transition zones between two habitats are the places that are notoriously full of life and interaction, so it is true where different cultures meet. Consequently, the more cultures people experience, the more enriching their interactions with other people from different cultures will be. Multiculturalism can be a source of inspiration and compassion for humanity and thus eliminate the fear of the unknown, which propels the notion of otherness.
